WORKS

Forms, Shapes, and Lines

Artist Statement

The lines, shapes, and forms I use in my work originate from observation in the natural world. They are important as a vehicle for developing compositions in my work and as symbolism in their systems and lifecycles.  I find them in fields, vacant lots, and woodlands, often working from the same species on multiple images to reinforce these subtle shapes. By repeating these forms, I create patterns, and patterns create rhythms suggesting movement. Rhythms also knit the work together visually in an almost lyrical way.

When I discover these inspiring lines, shapes, and forms in nature my aim is to extract their distinctive rhythms and patterns into my own work. It could be as simple as a north wind causing a species of plants to curl their leaves all in the same way, seedpods formed in groups, or branches growing at the same angle. In each case, the patterns and rhythms begin to surface. It is that pulse and movement that I look for.
